The Romance of Islands
March 27, 2007
Casey Muller

I arrived safely in Kauai yesterday, and am starting to get settled in. I posted a few pictures, all taken from my bedroom here or the backyard just outside.

There's something about islands that's always attracted me. In Civilization, Sim City, even D&D campaigns way back in the day, I always enjoyed designing and building empires and castles on Islands and in Archipelagos. No man is an island, but they feel so defensible and safe. True, they're isolated, but they also have exotic off-shoots that have evolved only there, and a controlled environment where perfection feels reachable.

I wonder if the same urge that draws me to islands also made me and my family argue over who would get the turret bedroom if we ever had a house with one? I dunno, I need to think about it more, but when I saw Kauai rising out of the endless Pacific from the airplane, it definitely stirred something inside of me. With all the traveling I've been doing recently, I'm surprised this is the first time I've been on an island in a decade.
