I've been working from the Los Feliz Public Library all day, and I gotta say- public libraries are pretty great.
The variety of people and subjects that have passed through my hearing today really reveals the value of the institution. Even more than that I love how reverent everybody is- whispering, looking horrified if their cell phone rings, smiling at strangers (well, that may just be Los Feliz). A library feels a lot more holy than a church to me.
I don't think this branch was one of the Los Angeles Carnegie libraries, but he and Bill Gates both found a great way to help people help themselves. Living the startup life (which is like the college life, but faster), I appreciate once again the great free services the library provides.
I've spent my library day almost exclusively dealing with taxes. Among other things, I've learned the legal way to pay someone to snitch- a 1099-MISC:
Fees paid to informers. A payment to an informer as an award, fee, or reward for information about criminal activity is not required to be reported if the payment is made by a federal, state, or local government agency, or by a nonprofit organization exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) that makes the payment to further the charitable purpose of lessening the burdens of government.
So unfortunately, any informers that Jamglue employs will have to pay taxes on the money. Yet another reason to incorporate as a non-profit.
I do wish I had brought headphones along.
