A few days ago, a CompUSA deal made the rounds online; they had a
$29.99 instant rebate on some $30 shelves (no longer on their
site). From the picture, it looked like a perfect match for a little
nook in my bedroom:
So I went over to the closest store to find one. After some searching,
I finally found buried in the television section a plain cardboard box
with the correct SKU on it. I figured they weren't selling because of
the ugly packaging:
(If you'll look closely at that picture, you might notice something which I did not at the time.) There was another box there, and I almost bought two, but I was going to a movie, and didn't want to be lugging both around. I ended up borrowing the penny from the cashier, wrestling it to the subway, and dropping it off at my office. It took me until tonight to bring it home, and in the meantime a friend had tried unsuccesfully to get one, so I was kicking myself for not buying both and asking if there were more in the back.
So I opened up the box, and look what I found:
So yes, the label on the cardboard box says quantity two, which neither I, nor the cashier, nor the manager he asked noticed. So that explains the weight. I put them together, and the nook is nicely filled:
Of course, it could be double filled:
But that'd be silly, so I ended up with:
And now I'm wondering- what would be the legal thing to do here? Call
up and offer them a penny? Was it their mistake, and not my
responsibility? Could they charge me the retail price if I wanted to
keep it?
