Okay, I'm still working on a name, but I finally found the time to turn one of my furniture designs into reality, by building a lamp to give to my parents for Christmas.
I really enjoy making almost anything from scratch, just to break down the abstraction layer around everyday objects. I think my design for the lamp is pretty good: simple and utilitarian (modern?), but unique; check out the pictures.
I started with the wall switch, and since I was using regular electrical wiring, I began thinking about the ability to chain the lamps together. In the end I chose to make the outlets I added to the sides not controlled by the switch, but you can still chain them and independently control them, not to mention plug in laptops, cellphone chargers, and other desktop electronics as needed.
I don't have a picture of the final installation in my parents' living room with shade, I'll get one soon. I may take a second try at the basic design for my own use, with a few improvements.
